The Formal Pictures

Wedding Photography - The Formal Pictures

This is the part of the wedding day that no one enjoys – but, your family will probably want a group photograph for ‘above the mantle piece’ and you will probably want  a great, romantic picture to put on your wall (or Facebook profile!)

The formal photographs are the point at which most brides and grooms (and guests) fall out with their photographer. The photographer wants to try and get every group picture just perfect, and yet the people they need to photograph are often in the bar, their room or have simply disappeared!. Time ticks on, people are standing around waiting and nerves get frayed. The photographer gets anxious and stressed – and before you know it the day is ruined.

No matter how good your photographs are, it is not worth ruining your day in order to get them!

How do we do things differently?

We meet with you a few weeks prior to the wedding at the venue. At this meeting you give us a list of the ‘formal’ group shots you require. We ask you to give a copy of this list to at least two ushers or family friends, so when we come to take the photographs it is not us that has to do the gathering of people – the ushers do it. This means that as we are taking the first picture the ushers are gathering the next group. You simply walk from one photograph to the next without any delay. Doing this, we can usually photograph 12-15 formal pictures in less than 20 minutes.  Trust me, you will be so grateful that things were organised this way – so you can spend a lot more time with your friends, and not with the photographer.

But does this mean the formal pictures will be boring and old-fashioned?   Absolutely not. As photographers we hate lining people up ‘firing squad style’ to take their pictures. It is just so boring. We are relaxed, humourous and fun during the day and are skilled at relaxing people and making them feel at ease. We use this skill to create ‘informal formal’ pictures – pictures that show family groups, but in a relaxed, modern and artistic manner.

Of course, we also spend a little time just with the bride and groom taking some romantic pictures if required!! (usually about 10 minutes, as the ushers are getting the first formal group together)
