Promotional Photo shoot at The Palace Hotel in Manchester

Last week we were asked to spend the day at The Palace Hotel in Manchester to photograph wedding images to be used in the hotels promotional material (website, brochure etc)

We arrived at the hotel (on Oxford St in Manchester city center) at 6.30am ! and photographed throughout the day until 7pm. Several of the function rooms had been set up as for a wedding and models employed to pose as the bride and groom.

It was a long day but some great shots were obtained in what turned out to be very difficult circumstances,

Commercial Photography in Manchester – food and drink

As the wedding photography season starts to get a bit quieter we ‘keep out hand in’ by taking on more commercial photography work in the Manchester and Cheshire area. (Our camera’s are very expensive, so they need to be kept working!) Yesterday saw us at The Egerton Arms, Chelford, Cheshire where we took some food and drink photographs for use on the pubs forthcoming new website and publicity material. This is a completely different discipline for us, but the experience comes in very handy when we have to photograph the cake and table settings at weddings. I am sometimes asked why commercial photography is cheaper than wedding photography. The answer is – it’s not! The hourly rate charged seems low (about £100 per hour) but with commercial photography a fee is also paid to the photographer every time an image is used. So once the photographer has taken the picture he earns money from it’s use, sometimes for many years. With wedding photography, a ‘one time fee’ is paid to us and the copyright is given to the bride and groom. A few examples from the photoshoot can be seen below

Mussel Photography Competition!

Well, this is certainly something different!

As well as running Northwest Photography myself and Carol (my wife and business partner) also run The Cheshire Wedding Photographers Dining Club. It is an organisation that brings together local wedding photographers once a month and allows to chat about the wedding photography industry over a meal (and a pint or two!).

This week, the venue chosen for the dinner was The Egerton Arms in Chelford. When we phoned to reserve the table the landlord asked us to bring our cameras as the pub has started offering a plate of mussels and a plate of chips for £5 on Wednesday evenings and he needed a photograph for publicity material and his website.

So…….. on Wednesday evening myself and Andy Cork (a Dining Club member) found ourselves in a pub photographing a plate of mussels! (makes a change from brides)

The landlord is going to choose his favourite picture from the ones below and whoever took it will get a free meal.

Back to weddings this weekend!!

Update !

The winning picture is the second one (taken by yours truly at Northwest Photography). The deciding factor was the colour and vibrance of the ‘meat’ in the mussels, and the uncluttered background. (I have to admit the the photograph was heavily ‘photoshoped’ !)

Commercial Photoshoot – Manchester Ship Canal

After a busy weekend shooting two long weddings we had to rise at 5am last Tuesday to get to the Manchester Ship Canal for a photoshoot at sunrise. We had been asked to provide two photographs to be given as a gift to the owners of the Manchester Ship Canal and Bridgewater Canal and so chose the location carefully (at the point where one crosses the other – the Barton Aqueduct in Manchester). The gifts are to be given by a local brass band and so we decided to feature one player holding a Euphonium and shoot the picture at sunrise. The Manchester weather behaved itself for a change and only a small amount of digital manipulation was required to add some colour to the sky. Thanks to our ‘model’ for the day, Alison, for getting up so early in such cold weather. Right…..I’m off to bed now to catch up on some much needed sleep!!!

Events and Commercial Photography

Whether its a school prom, a corporate product launch, a family party or an awards ceremony Northwest Photography is there to capture the moment. Events photography is a very similar skill to wedding photography as both require skills with people as well as with the camera. We recently shot a function at Shrigley Hall Hotel in Cheshire, Sheffield University Dental School Prom. 150 students made the trip over the pennines for a night a partying and dancing and we were there to photograph the guests having a good time. We are different from most events photographers in that we dont sell prints after the event. The organisers get ALL the pictures on a disc copyright free, we simply charge an hourly rate to attend.
