Black and White Wedding Photography

After every wedding we photograph we return to our studio to ‘process’ the pictures from the event. One of the decisions we have to make is which pictures to leave in colour and which to add an effect to, and which to turn into black and white. We would love to be able to give every wedding couple every picture in colour, sepia, vintage tone, back and white etc but that would result in many days work and thousands of pictures!

So…. we use our 15 years experience to judge which pictures look best in black and white (or with an artistic effect) , and leave the rest in full colour. This decision we make is not irreversible and we always keep the full colour picture just in case you don’t like the changes we have made to certain images.

One of the recent trends we have seen with wedding photography is that more and more people like black and white pictures – often in preference to colour. Don’t worry if you are not one of these people as before every wedding we meet with the bride and groom to discuss final arrangements, and one of the things we ask you is “what style of photography do you like?” We show you some examples of the differing effects we can add to pictures and you explain the style your prefer.

A few years ago the ‘spot colouring’ of wedding images was very popular (where a picture is mainly black and white but with a small amount of colour kept in certain areas of the image). This is becoming less and less popular, but if it is something you like we are happy to oblige!

A few of our favourite back and white wedding photographs from the past 6 months are shown below (along with a couple that show ‘spot colouring’). DO you prefer colour?
